  Overview

Augmented Reality Image Synthesis
through Illumination Reconstruction
and its Integration
in Interactive and Shared Mobile AR-systems
for E-(motion)-Commerce Applications

Proposal Number: IST-2000-28707

Action Line: IV.4.2

The goal of the ARIS project is to provide new and innovative AR-technologies for e-(motion)-commerce application, where the products can be presented in the context of its future environment. Two promising system approaches will be developed:

(1) An interactive desktop system, where the end-user can easily integrate 3D product models (e.g. furniture) into a set of images of his real environment, taking consistent illumination of real and virtual objects into account.

(2) A mobile AR-unit, where 3D product models can be directly visualized on a real site and be discussed with remote participants, taking shared augmented technologies into account. Both systems will be implemented based on the same technology infrastructure and will be tested on well defined application scenarios with end-users.

The interactive ARIS-system will allow the user to reconstruct geometric AND illumination properties out of a set of images in a semi-automatic way. The user can place 3D product models in the reconstructed image space and see the direct and indirect lighting effects in his real environment caused by the virtual modifications in interactive update rates (s. fig. 2). In addition, he can modify existing light sources or include additional artificial light sources, including day lighting. Thus, ARIS will provide an important added-value in image synthesis, by enhancing the realism of augmented environments through consistent illumination of a scene containing real and virtual objects. To complete a new e-(motion)-commerce application, a new 3D product catalogue of a furniture company will be prototyped (including lighting parameters) and combined with the ARIS system.
